Hatha Yoga – The Root of All Yoga Styles

Hatha Yoga is the foundation of almost all modern yoga styles. The word Hatha comes from Sanskrit and means “sun and moon” – symbolizing the union of opposites: strength and softness, activity and stillness, masculine and feminine energies. This practice is all about balance – between muscle activation and deep release, between body and mind, between effort and ease.

In a traditional Hatha yoga class, postures (asanas) are usually held for longer periods, allowing you to settle into each pose, connect with your breath, and become fully present. The practice also includes breathwork (pranayama) and meditation, and sometimes cleansing techniques (shatkarma) like kapalabhati (fire breath) or nauli (abdominal rotation) to support internal purification and energy flow.

Hatha Yoga has its roots in the ancient yogic texts, especially the teachings of Patanjali, who wrote the Yoga Sutras – outlining the eightfold path to self-realization and inner freedom. Hatha later evolved as a physical and energetic practice to support this spiritual path through the body.

Whether you're new to yoga or looking to deepen your practice, Hatha Yoga offers a powerful, grounded, and mindful way to reconnect with yourself.
